As those two rounded a corner, Michael looked at Barbara’s face. Her lips were parted, held open as she breathed heavily. Then she said, “I liked our group. I even liked Mrs. Fisher and the other widows. She had tears in her eyes telling me what you said to her. And I already knew something about it. I hope we didn’t ruin all her fun. They’re having lots of fun, all the widows. I like them. But I like you too. I’m glad you were dumped with me, Michael.”

Her eyes opened wide, alluring, encouraging a response.

“We could still catch the group in Rome,” Michael said, “and your luggage. This travel agent knows every flight.”

“But I need to go home and take care of my kids,” Barbara said. “And you have to get back to your office.”

“We could both be irresponsible,” Michael said.

“I’d like that.”

“So would I.”

“Let’s,” she said.
