They made love three times that night, as Sonya confided to her half-sister Connie a few days later. “I was exhausted, Connie. Charles went out to get a Herald Tribune the next morning and to call his broker and some other money people about paying for the Citron. I couldn’t sleep because of the coffee we had in the room. We had wonderful, flaky rolls, and sweet, smoke smelling coffee. After I lay in bed awhile, I decided to go outside, look for a good magazine somewhere, and bring it back to the room. When I saw him in the yellow Citroen kissing the desk girl, this is true Connie, the first thing I thought was ‘how can he still be horny.’ It occurred to me to knock on the window and ask him. But I didn’t. Maybe not knowing him well made it so easy to leave. I went back to the room, packed up, and got a taxi to the train station. The train left for Paris just then, so I bought three packs of Galouise and got on it without a ticket. The conductor sold me a ticket after we left the station. I have never left anyone easier. Didn’t even write a note.”

“You left the ‘pet’ pretty easily, too,” Connie responded.
