They were talking on Saturday afternoon. The following Tuesday afternoon a letter came addressed to Connie:
Dear Connie:
It is well understood by me that you have taken to dislike me as I am not a beach person and you are accustomed to those less serious than I. Perhaps by now you know that your half-sister Sonya has left me and taken up with another man, though I now have reason to believe this man has left her and gone back to his wife. The sole reason I address this letter to you is that I do not know my wife’s location and therefore am not able to plead my case to her personally. I am over the Atlantic as I now write and will be in my office in New York as you receive this letter. It is very important to me that Sonya call me as soon as you have heard from her. I am of the belief that she will be dissatisfied with Dr. Charles Ashe in a long relationship and there are things about him which she should know going into such a situation. Perhaps she has already discovered this. In addition, I would like Sonya to know that I will forgive her for leaving me and I believe that we could have a very good life together once I reduce my work schedule to accommodate her lifestyle. I may consider part-time work for a corporate client and quit the firm or something along those lines. One reason our marriage has not worked so far is I have treated her more like a prize than a person and she has treated me more like a contest winner than a husband. I have thought long and hard about my life since she left me and I would like a chance to start our marriage over on a fresh note. Please show her this letter if you see her. Otherwise, simply have her call me in New York.
Very truly yours,
Michael Clarke
