Fritz looked well; a nice gray three-piece suit, the vest hiding the extra pounds since law school. Barbara sat across from him and realized it may have been a mistake to call someone who she knew. They chatted about their old classmates. Fritz asked about everyone including Sondra Walsh. Barbara had completely forgotten about Sondra. At a party after finals second year, Chuck and Sondra disappeared for a few hours. Then he mentioned Toby Miller. Neither had seen him since graduation. “He really had a thing for you Barbara,” Fritz said.

“Oh, he had a thing for every women in the class.”

“Probably did,” Fritz laughed. “He probably did. He was a horny one. So, you still have that Porsche. Boy was I envious when you got that Porsche?”

“No, I sold it when Cindy was born. I got a station wagon. Mom’s taxi.”

She wanted off the subject of law school.

“So you never practiced law?”

“No, I found out I was pregnant when we were studying for the bar exam.”

“That’s right. I remember. Yeah. A few other women never practiced law either. You did pass the bar though. I remember your name in the paper. Remember when we studied for the bar together. Remember that. That was fun. There were six of us in my little apartment every night for the last couple of weeks. Those were the days. Staying up all hours talking about the cases, eating popcorn, arguing about decisions. It’s amazing none of us got shot in that neighborhood. I was sure they would steal your Porsche.”

She remembered that she did not care if they stole her Porsche and she remembered that she knew Chuck must have been with some girlfriend when she was there studying late at night, and those were not the good old days for her. It seemed there never had been any good old days in her life.
